2020-2021 may have been an unusual year for the Hurricanes in competitive sport, but it was a positive year in the classroom.
36 Hurricanes student-athletes from Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) sports were recognized as scholar-athletes. Meanwhile, an additional 23 student-athletes who participated in non-CCAA sports were also recognized as scholar-athletes.
“Undoubtedly, we all know what challenges the pandemic placed upon everyone over the past year,” shared Director of Athletics and Recreation, Albert Roche.
“We watched as student-athletes endured a time where sport and the identity that goes with participation in collegiate play was stolen from this group. While some student-athletes got to practice and had limited play, for the most part it was a year without varsity.
We witnessed their trials and tribulations throughout the pandemic and admired their commitment and resiliency as they pushed to train and maintain their practice regimes as they managed their learning along the way. In many ways this was a more difficult year than ever and we proudly celebrate their academic success with them as they fought through the adversity of 2020-21.
We congratulate all our diverse mix of student scholar-athletes on their academic achievements this past year and we look forward to a return to Hurricanes varsity in 2021-22.”
To qualify as a scholar-athlete, a student-athlete must be in full-time studies, achieving an average of 80 percent or higher.
The male and female student-athletes with the highest academic average for the 2020-21 year were Suzanne Gray and Logan Rempel.
From Charlottetown, PEI, Suzanne Gray, of the women’s soccer Hurricanes, is Holland College’s top female student-athlete, posting a 98.66 per cent average while studying in the Human Resource Management program.
Meanwhile, Logan Rempel is the top male student-athlete, as the Sport and Leisure Management student from Grande Prairie, Alberta, earned a 95.66 per cent average with the Hurricanes men’s basketball team.
Finally, the women’s soccer team was the Hurricanes Academic Team of the Year, leading the way with highest percentage of their roster achieving scholar-athlete status in 2020-21.
